Erie Canal Bicycle Drift (8.28 – 9.3)

Heres a quick run down of our trip down the Erie Canal on bicycles:
It took us 5 days to pedal 402 miles. 95% of the trip was done on really relaxing towpath or paved trails away from the road. This meant quiet, mellow pedaling for days on end. Peaceful.
And for any aspiring Buddhists out there; bike touring is way more living in the present than your lame meditation…

This was taken at a manmade rookery in High Island TX; which is a weird name for a town that was definitely not an island.
Also weird was the amount of japanese men with incredible camera rigs pointed at these birds. Weird set ups with 2 bodies and 2 lenses attached to the same beefy tripod, and the guys with fingers on both shutter buttons just firing away.

Roughneck wages

An average roughneck in west texas makes $30-$40/hour. This is the least skilled, entry level position on a rig. Most people start off as a roughneck, and move up to tool pusher, or drill operator pretty quickly.
After talking to a few investors and finishing companies around west texas, it appears there is a definite roughneck labor shortage.
So if you can pass a drug test, and want to work on a loud, dangerous, hot oil rig, come on down to west texas…

Back in the permian basin

Back to the sulphur stink of west texas.
The type of oil being pumped up here has a high sulfur content, and is called sour crude. All the impurities and sulfur make sour crude more difficult (and more expensive) to refine. Most of the gasoline that you put in your car comes from sweet crude oil, but recently a new process has come online to refine sour crude into gasoline.

More cliff dwelling madness…

Thanks to the tip from Deano, I made it to Bandelier National Monument today(after getting blissfully lost in a high desert snow storm). The cliff dwellers here are the same as in Canyon De Shelley, but the naming conventions is where it gets interesting…

At Canyon De Shelley, the cliff dwellers are called Anasazi. Canyon De Shelley is right in the middle of a huge Navajo reservation. Stick with me here.
At Bandelier, the same peoples are called Ancient Puebloans. Why? Because Anasazi means ‘ancient enemies’ in Navajo. So the modern Puebloans that still live near Bandelier (and who claim lineage from the cliff dwellers) arent too hip to the term ‘Anasazi’.

Whatever they want to be called, they had some cool homes. In a kidinatreehouse kind of way. Here’s Bandelier:

The Anasazi occupied large sections of the southwest from 100 BC to just about 300 years ago. They started off in the valleys and canyon floors, like normal people. But then they probably pissed off some bad asses and conversations like this happened:

More Permian Basin geology. The weird formations inside the caves are reefs that were covered with halite and gypsum from all the sea water evaporating 250 million years ago. Sulfuric acid and uplifting are what carved out the caves out and brought them near the surface.
These caves are massive. Miles and miles long, with some rooms soaring hundreds of feet high. Not expecting to be all that impressed when I walked in, I walked out overwhelmed.

Its all about the light.

These 2 shots were taken at Monahans Sand Dunes Park. These dunes and the even larger dune field at White Sands in new mexico are part of an ancient sea bed that used to cover west texas and eastern new mexico. This sea bed, now called the permian basin, is responsible for all the oil(and dune fields) in this area.
Oil did not come from dinosaurs. It also did not come from land based animals or plants. Oil is a product of ancient reefs in ancient seas. These reefs, which were not coral based, got compacted under several hundred million years worth of sediments and subductions, and then.. OIL!
And sand dunes.

In the extreme upper portion of west texas is a town called Grandfalls. Its a quasi ghost town. Population less than a hundred. But it used to be big enough to support this skating rink. Boom town, bust town…

While I was inside the rink, the wind was blowing like stink outside, and making a ton of noise. I was using a tripod and completely focused on what i was doing. I just tuned out all the crazy noises.

But I caught some movement out of the corner of my eye and looked up. On top of the slanting ductwork was a fox. Staring at me. From about 9 ft away. I froze and we just sat there for almost a minute, eyes locked, in this busted out old roller rink in the middle of a dead town in texas. Then he or she had enough, and shot down the ductwork and jumped out through a hole in the wall.

No shots of the fox. It would have ruined the moment. But heres the roller rink where it all went down.

Another day on the rig…
The mud covering this hand is from tripping pipe. When they bring the 60 ft sections of pipe out of the ground, theres pressure that shoots this mud everywhere. These guys get covered in this stuff, it dries, and then they get covered again.

I spent the day hitting the bricks around Midland, trying to get access to well sites and rigs. This was much harder than anticipated. Persistence and unorthodox thinking (ADD) finally paid off, and Im good to go on Oryan Rig #15 tomorrow. This should be interesting…

Wandering in and out of these drilling companies offices today, I got to rub elbows with the roughnecks trying to score jobs in the fields. A different crowd. A very different crowd.

Trapped in 208 (Hurricane Katrina)

I was in New Orleans just a few days after Katrina hit. As an insurance adjuster.
The company I was working for had found secure lodging for a few of us just a few blocks from the superdome.
The city was still more than half flooded, smoking, and insane.
The first week in New Orleans was intense.

We shared the hotel with ATF agents that were decked out in full urban warfare gear. You dont think of the ATF as being all that bad ass, but you’d be wrong.
They had cut down AR-15′s with the SWAT stocks, body armor, knee pads, goggles, helmets… the whole deal.

The ATF was there because of the amount of guns that had suddenly flooded into the streets via the numerous pawn shops, and gun stores that had been looted. Hundreds and hundreds of guns suddenly in the hands of …well, who knows.
So the ATF took over a large part of a looted, half ruined luxury hotel, and used it as their base of operations.
And being surrounded by guys with machine guns never felt so comforting…

These 4 photos aren’t why I posted all this. We’ve all seen enough of these photos. They’re everywhere.
I wanted to post something from being trapped in my hotel room that first week. Because after curfew, after dark, you did not go outside. Not outside the hotel, not even outside your room.

So here is a little gallery shot while being trapped in room 208 of the Windsor Hotel in downtown New Orleans just a few days after the major flooding receded from the city.

Its nice when a project starts in your head and then actually turns out as you imagined. Too many times I’ve thought up some great idea, and then once it was implemented it looked nothing like what I thought or wanted.

This project is going to show the strange fake foods that are starting to become mainstream, and their real counterparts, side by side.

First up is fake crab meat. Made from Pollock and something called Surimi. It’s been in american grocery stores forever and is one of the old school comparisons I have.

The set up for these shots included a stool that I sat the guys(and girl) on. I wanted them comfortable enough to stay for some questions. I had a voice recorder turned on and recording while I got them to talk about their time at the plant.
I shot while asking these questions so that I could capture them in a ‘real’ moment and not just a pose. I was also hoping that the reminiscences might just shine through.

I had a few days booked at the Steel Plant Museum in Lackawanna, and several very helpful people (thanks Mel, Joe, Jerry) got some guys from the plant to swing by and talk to me for a little bit.
This was mildly sucessful, and I got several great interviews and some nice shots.

But the real break happened when I was told that the very last union meeting was happening just a few miles down the road at a Knights of Columbus.
Jackpot.
Stories about ‘lid man’ days, cooking turkeys on coke ovens, and people being melted in smelters.
And some photos. Here are just a few. I ended up interviewing and shooting over 45 guys.
The last part of the project is now just about done…

A self contained city, 3 miles long and 1 mile wide. 35,000 workers hung their hard hats here at its peak in the late 1950′s. This place generated its own electricity from steam that it created making steel.

You guessed it. More from the UC shoot. The post processing on these shots is… involved. For 2 days I shot almost exclusively 3 shot bracketed sequences(-2,0,+2 EV) to make things a bit more interesting.

These are from a single table set up. Each aluminum table was about 12′ x 30′ and was air cushioned to reduce vibrations. Like a giant air hockey table.
Speaking of reducing vibrations; the entire lab was located several hundred feet below ground, embedded in the bedrock.

It’s funny how sometimes a shot you fire off with little mind and no planning ends up playing a larger role.
This was taken from the top floor of a new building on the UC campus during a quick walkthrough.
There were no plans for this shot, and I set nothing up. I just liked the way the sun was blasting off the glass roofs and the interesting colors the glass gave everything.

Postprocessing more from this shoot, I started playing around with this pallette and integrating it into the other photos. And I think it works rather well.

DEMOLITION DERBY

I got the chance to sit in the drivers seat of a 1999 Crown Victoria during the WORLD’S LARGEST DEMOLITION DERBY last week. With a fancy leather coat. And no socks.
Thanks to an awesome pit crew and the help of those more mechanically apt (Mark, Mark, Tom and Neil) I ended up not only placing in the beginners heat, but taking second in the feature event.

Thats right. 2 very large trophys and $500.
Still not sure what to think about that…

This was all part of a little project I decided to do on the Erie County fair this year. The demo derby is going to be seperated out in this little web gallery because the fair project is now going to be a collaboration with writer/friend Carra.

GOODBYE BUDDY

Isaac loved to run in the snow.
I remember having to dig ice out of his huge paws during sub zero ski outings.
And I remember a lot of dark winter nights at Delaware park with just a pair of skis and Isaac running next to me.

Isaac may not have been the bravest, but he was a good boy and 7 years was not nearly enough time.
You’re going to be missed buddy…

A dairy cow judging at the fair. There was a surprisingly large and vocal crowd for this.
I always thought the idea was to distance yourself from the animals on a farm?

And if youre here looking for large fair/demo galleries; be patient.

2nd PLACE IN THE FEATURE EVENT!

Thats right. The Crown Vic pulled through and not only won the first heat, but came in second place in the main feature event.
I dont even change the oil on my own cars, and ended up beating out some serious, mean grease monkeys.
And the trash talk going on right before the smashing starts was priceless.

Two trophys, $500, and a ton of fun.
Oh, and heres the after photo of my car.

Yesterday was the first of many days to be spent at the Erie County Fair in a quick little project Im doing. This will include animals, Dale t-shirts, non life sized ships, and a crash-up derby.
Which I will be driving in.

INDIA #5 JODHPUR STREET KIDS

5k(or was it 6?) mud run around the rice hill road trails.
I finished it with no injuries or attacked hearts. Good job to Tom for beating all of us by several minutes.

The line between urban and rural life in India is nonexistent.
Just about any domesticated animal not used for meat is going to be present in an Indian town/city. Goats, chickens, cows…

India #3 – DHOBI LAUNDRY GHATS

Dhobi Laundry Ghats.

Taken in the Dhobi laundry ghats in Mumbai. A mini city that houses 5000 people and has one purpose; washing the city’s clothes.

Tourists would come to the top of a bridge and look down into this mess and snap photos. I walked down into the ghats and asked to be led around. And for a small fee I was.

Tight, claustrophobic little alleys and wash basins formed from concrete. It was midday and hot when I was there and most of the workers were out of the sun. Taking a break until late afternoon/evening.

INDIA #2 ELLORA AND AJANTA CAVE SYSTEMS

These are 2 seperate cave systems that are relatively close together and share some similarities. One of them being to completely amaze me.
Each site was a system of dozens of individual caves carved out of the side of a mountain. Most were started around 2nd century BC and completed around the 6th century AD.

The caves are a mix of 3 faiths. There are Hindu caves, Buddhist, and Jain caves. They tended to cluster around each other as religions became popular, peaked and faded in India.
The stonework is jaw dropping amazing. There are entire temples carved out of a mountain.

India #1 Mumbai to Ellora Caves

I will have a large gallery up at the end of all these blog posts combining the photos, but for now Im just going to post a few at a time and some text.

This shot was taken near Chowpatty district in Mumbai. I waited by the water truck for the right person to walk by.

The bicycle is still the workhorse of a lot of people in India. Auto rickshaws, trucks and taxis clog the streets but bikes are cheap, mechanically simple, and dont require gas.

New Format!

Full Frame Life has changed formats again. The old format made it difficult to display several photos at once and writing anything was a waste of time. So here we are.
This is good. All is good.

The old Full Frame Life(which lasted 16 months) might be lost forever. During the changeover, I made a few mistakes, and then a few more…
But its possible you’ll see a link to the old format up top soon.

The first few entries are going to be India/Nepal based as I havent really had a chance to put much of that stuff online yet.
